The wood, densely grained and richly hued, is possibly huali rosewood. Nearly all visible surfaces have been decorated with inlays of auspicious motifs such as double dishes, bats, dragons, phoenixes, and waves. The center is inset with a blue and white porcelain plaque decorated with a dragon emerging from clouds above rolling waves. The painting style of the dragon, as well as the quality of underglaze blue, is very typical of the late Qing. |
